Visual Culture - Week 7 Post - Introduction to advertising

Updated: May 31, 2023

Advertising is a technique or a way people/ companies use to bring attention to a product or it is producing advertisements for commercial products or services. It is usually done to bring a product to the spotlight, Another purpose of advertising is to enhance a company's image to gain more customers, for example, a restaurant offering free food for children on a banner or flyer is a way of advertising. Advertising is also used to raise awareness and encourages people to donate to a cause. We see advertising almost everywhere this is because they are invented to persuade people and advertisers always have a target audience in mind. There are many ways and forms of adverts they can vary from audio, printed, and visual forms, for example, radio banners, leaflets, websites, and television.

The most common form of advertising is print advertising which is using physical ways like magazines and newspapers. During this week we also learn about branding and logos, Logos are symbols made out of either texts and images or a combination of both. Branding is a way of distinguishing brands from each other. We also learn how to deconstruct an advert by visual, technical, and language codes. Below are some adverts I selected from class and some annotations.

Fig 1."Love yourself Poster"

I chose this advert because It promotes self-love and allows girls or women to be by themselves and allows them to be happy in their own company. I love how the message stands out and the way the vector characters are in their world.

Fig 2. "Victoria's Secret Poster"

I also choose this advert for class because I love to promote equality in everything I do, when I saw this advert I liked the fact Victoria's secret promoters have promoted both big girls and sporty girls.

The messages are very clear and very easy, In both posters, there are various formal elements which are colour, form, and texture.
