Updated: May 6, 2023

Primary and Secondary Research for my Presentation

THE ROLE OF BILLBOARDS AND POSTERS

Both billboards and posters are all examples of print adverts, they are all printed on materials and used to advertise ideas, goods and services. The difference between them is the size, the billboard is bigger than that of the poster. Billboards are always placed around a city or town because of how big they are, but posters are usually stuck on walls around and used along a major highways. The importance or the purpose of posters and billboards are: 1. They help in building the awareness of a brand, a good-looking poster will help attract customers to purchase whatever is being advertised. 2. Billboards are the best way to advertise things on a larger scale and because of their large size, it is easy to recognize from far away.

WHEN DO YOU KNOW THEY HAVE BEEN EFFECTIVE

For a business, they will know when the print adverts are effective when their sales increase and they gain more public names and more referrals which is a good way and a positive way of using a poster. For a brand, you will know your advertisement has been effective when your brand is going worldwide and when you see that specific brand gaining recognition from firms and when other brands are requesting a collaboration or partnership.

HOW IT IS RELEVANT TO VISUAL CULTURE?

Visual culture is the aspect of culture expressed in visual images. Posters and Billboards are also visual images, this is because we see the message with our eyes. It is part of visual culture because visual culture composes of all visual arts such as performing arts, videos, television, billboards, fashion and other man-made visual influences on our lives.

Brand According to Gerard J. Wellis(2004, pg.9), a brand means a clearly distinguishable name, which a firm uses to uniquely identify its product with consumers and distinguish it from that of competitors. Slogan Cambridge Dictionary defines a slogan as a short, easily remembered phrase used to describe the character of something, especially for a product brand Logo A logo is a symbol or a design created by an organization to identify its products, uniforms, vehicles, and services. Target Audience According to Marketing Evolution(2022, paragraph 2), A target audience is a group of people or a group of consumers that are most likely to desire your product or service.

Connotation- this is the deeper meaning or the emotional meaning of something. This poster shows how delicate a woman is or how emotions can be when she receives a ring and but also the dress flying around shows freedom when the call is removed from her finger if she doesn't want to continue her marriage.

Denotation- this is the literal or primary meaning of something. This poster connotes a woman jumping through a diamond ring to advertise a luxury good.

Formal Elements of Art and Design in the Poster:

Colour: Blue has been used here as a sign of peace and calmness, but the negative meaning of blue can be emotional fragility and anxiety. The brightness of the colour is not that much and not that low, it is balanced. Pattern: In this poster, the diamonds on the ring have created a pattern, this is because of how they have been arranged. Space: There is an equal amount of negative and positive space, the centre of the poster is defined by the photograph and the rest of it is negative space because it does not contain any pictures. Texture: The dress looks or seems to have a smooth text. The rocks or diamonds also look like they will be smooth since it has been processed.

Similarities

Greg Neill & Don Fine Jewellers and Keepsake Diamond Rings both used similar visual languages to communicate meaning to the audience by both having rings which have diamonds on them showing luxury and quality, both women in the posters display emotions when it comes to handling the ring. They both used similar visual language because they are both advertising the same type of product.

Differences

There are numerous differences in both posters, the colours in both are different, this is because back in the old days colour was not really used frequently so the vintage poster only has black and white whereas the modern poster has blue as its colour, the fonts for the vintage poster is more vibrant while the font used in the modern poster is more classic, the vintage poster is more informative because the rings are just sketched so they needed to add more information which would allow people to buy it whereas the modern-day poster has the good on display which would catch the eye of the audience
